Two Day National Seminar on Eco-Future: A Voice for Nature December 17-18, 2019

Two Day National Seminar on Eco-Future: A Voice for Nature, December 17-18, 2019

The Department of English, Government College Kattappana

Environmental degradation is one of the major global issues that the twenty first century is affected with. The depletion of the Ozone layer, resources, air, water and soil, the destruction of the eco system, the extinction of wildlife and global warming are some of the consequences of man’s overuse and exploitation of land and water for urbanisation and industrialisation. As over the decades literature has become a pretext to the study of environmental issues under the influence of ecological debates, and relevant texts have often been evaluated according to their capacity to articulate ecological contexts. Literature realizes and visualizes that individuals and social pathologies are coextensive. At the same time it is important to note how mankind defines its relationship with nature and to investigate to what extent ecocentric and biocentric voices can be heard over anthropocentric voices. The trouble is we have all let ourselves become part of the killer story, and so we may get finished along with it. Hence it is high time that we discuss the untold problematics of environmental devastation.

We call for papers in the following and related thrust areas.
 Ecocriticism
 Ecofeminism
 Urban Ecology and Environmentalism
 Ecomasculinity
 Ecopoetics

National Seminar on Partitions Revisited: Postmemory, History, Identity, 20th February 2020

National Seminar on Partitions Revisited: Postmemory, History, Identity, 20th February 2020

The English Literary Society
Zakir Husain Delhi College

One of the most defining events of South Asian history, the Partition of India in 1947 led to large-scale mass migration and altered the geopolitics of the region. Such has been the impact that its legacies continue to inform everyday experience of conflict and violence. As belated witnesses, we experience the historical and personal trauma through creative and literary works which constitute a rich corpus of Partition literature. While progressive writers like Sadat Hasan Manto have portrayed the movement of people across borders as a search for safe haven from the violence accompanied with this cataclysmic event, modernist writers like Intizar Husain have viewed this as an exodus for a promised land. The experience of suffering, exile, homelessness and loss have been immortalized by writers Faiz, Krishan Chander, Rajinder Singh Bedi, and Bhisham Sahni.
Bengal’s experience of Partition has been significantly different and has found expression in the works of Jibananda Das, Dibendyu Palit, Manik Bandhopadhyay, Sunanda Bhattacharya, Himani Bannerjee and others. Unlike Western India, the partition in Eastern India was a long drawn one. Here, the influx of migrant population continued over the next decades with a perceptible change in the demography of the north-eastern states of India, and continues to shape contemporary debates on citizenship. Homen Borgohain’s short story “Ismael Sheikhor Xandhanot” (2003) and Rita Chowdhary’s novel Makam (2010) document the trauma of migration and the related issues of resettlement in eastern India.
Narratives of partition help in understanding the workings of memory as well as ‘postmemory’, a term Marriane Hirsch uses to describe the relationship of the second generation to powerful, often traumatic experiences that preceded their births but that were nevertheless transmitted to them so deeply as to seem to constitute memories in their own right. Memories of lost homelands, cross border romances and nostalgia of ruptured relationships continue to animate recent popular films like Gadar – ek Prem Katha, (2001), Veer-Zaara (2004), and more recently Qissa (2014), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) and Raazi (2018). Earlier films such as Subaranrekha (1965), Garam Hawa (1973), Pinjar (2003) and Khamosh Pani (2003) have sensitively portrayed displacement, relocation and loss of a sense of a community, with clashes not only based on religious lines but class, caste, and gender issues also resurface with great urgency.
While memory has been the mainstay of Partition scholarship, recent critical engagement has focused on issue of borders and how it continues to affect lives especially along the borderlands. Partition and its lingering aftermath continue to shape contemporary debates on displacement and dispossession, citizenship and identity. An area of interdisciplinary research, Partition studies has taken different directions and continues to be an enigma in popular imagination. This National Students’ Seminar seeks to examine historical, literary, cinematic, graphic and personal narratives of partition from varying theoretical perspectives as it resonates with our present concerns.
We invite original research papers from undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as researchers from colleges and universities.

Papers may be related but not restricted to any one
of the following sub-themes:
• Colonialism, Nationalism, and the Partition
• Partition films and adaptations
• Borders and Borderlands
• Women in Partition
• Oral Narratives and Testimonies
• Migration and Refugees
• Graphic Narratives, Science Fiction and Slam Poetry
• Memory and Postmemory
• Partition Museum & Partition Archives
• Trauma and Violence

International Conference on “Media, Culture and Development: Issues and Perspectives” at BAOU Gujarat, 7-8 Feb 2020

International Conference on “Media, Culture and Development: Issues and Perspectives” at BAOU Gujarat, 7-8 Feb 2020

Broad theme: “Media, Culture and Development: Issues and Perspectives”

The nature and modes of operands of media have been changing drastically in the last few decades. During the print media dominated period, it took an important part in the freedom movement and post independent development of India. Then along with print media, in the supervision of the government, public sector broadcasters like AIR, DD hold the command to entertain, educate, and inform Indian citizens. With the economic reform along with other sectors, FDI also flows to the media industry. Numbers of private electronic media started mushrooming across the nation. Mass media reached to small cities, villages and each corner of the nation. In the last few years with the increasing reach of affordable internet and smartphone, new media are becoming a driving force in the information society. Media influences society, institutions and lifestyles which lead to evolution of media culture within culture. If culture is a set of values, beliefs and practices, then digital media has introduced a new culture which has removed the boundaries to communication and participation.

11 Habits of an Effective Teacher

11 Habits of an Effective Teacher
Carrie Lam

I really appreciate teachers who are truly passionate about teaching. The teacher who wants to be an inspiration to others. The teacher who is happy with his/her job at all times. The teacher who every child in the school would love to have. The teacher kids remember for the rest of their lives. Are you that teacher? Read on and learn 11 effective habits of an effective teacher.

1. Enjoys Teaching

Teaching is meant to be a very enjoyable and rewarding career field (although demanding and exhausting at times!). You should only become a teacher if you love children and intend on caring for them with your heart. You cannot expect the kids to have fun if you are not having fun with them! If you only read the instructions out of a textbook, it's ineffective. Instead, make your lessons come alive by making it as interactive and engaging as possible. Let your passion for teaching shine through each and everyday. Enjoy every teaching moment to the fullest..

2. Makes a Difference

There is a saying, "With great power, comes great responsibility". As a teacher, you need to be aware and remember the great responsibility that comes with your profession. One of your goals ought to be: Make a difference in their lives. How? Make them feel special, safe and secure when they are in your classroom. Be the positive influence in their lives. Why? You never know what your students went through before entering your classroom on a particular day or what conditions they are going home to after your class. So, just in case they are not getting enough support from home, at least you will make a difference and provide that to them.

3. Spreads Positivity

Bring positive energy into the classroom every single day. You have a beautiful smile so don't forget to flash it as much as possible throughout the day. I know that you face battles of your own in your personal life but once you enter that classroom, you should leave all of it behind before you step foot in the door. Your students deserve more than for you to take your frustration out on them. No matter how you are feeling, how much sleep you've gotten or how frustrated you are, never let that show. Even if you are having a bad day, learn to put on a mask in front of the students and let them think of you as a superhero (it will make your day too)! Be someone who is always positive, happy and smiling. Always remember that positive energy is contagious and it is up to you to spread it. Don't let other people's negativity bring you down with them.

4. Gets Personal

This is the fun part and absolutely important for being an effective teacher! Get to know your students and their interests so that you can find ways to connect with them. Don't forget to also tell them about yours! Also, it is important to get to know their learning styles so that you can cater to each of them as an individual. In addition, make an effort to get to know their parents as well. Speaking to the parents should not be looked at as an obligation but rather, an honour. In the beginning of the school year, make it known that they can come to you about anything at anytime of the year. In addition, try to get to know your colleagues on a personal level as well. You will be much happier if you can find a strong support network in and outside of school.

5. Gives 100%

Whether you are delivering a lesson, writing report cards or offering support to a colleague - give 100%. Do your job for the love of teaching and not because you feel obligated to do it. Do it for self-growth. Do it to inspire others. Do it so that your students will get the most out of what you are teaching them. Give 100% for yourself, students, parents, school and everyone who believes in you. Never give up and try your best - that's all that you can do. (That's what I tell the kids anyway!)

6. Stays Organized

Never fall behind on the marking or filing of students' work. Try your best to be on top of it and not let the pile grow past your head! It will save you a lot of time in the long run. It is also important to keep an organized planner and plan ahead! The likelihood of last minute lesson plans being effective are slim. Lastly, keep a journal handy and jot down your ideas as soon as an inspired idea forms in your mind. Then, make a plan to put those ideas in action.

7. Is Open-Minded

As a teacher, there are going to be times where you will be observed formally or informally (that's also why you should give 100% at all times). You are constantly being evaluated and criticized by your boss, teachers, parents and even children. Instead of feeling bitter when somebody has something to say about your teaching, be open-minded when receiving constructive criticism and form a plan of action. Prove that you are the effective teacher that you want to be. Nobody is perfect and there is always room for improvement. Sometimes, others see what you fail to see.

8. Has Standards

Create standards for your students and for yourself. From the beginning, make sure that they know what is acceptable versus what isn't. For example, remind the students how you would like work to be completed. Are you the teacher who wants your students to try their best and hand in their best and neatest work? Or are you the teacher who couldn't care less? Now remember, you can only expect a lot if you give a lot. As the saying goes, "Practice what you preach".

9. Finds Inspiration

An effective teacher is one who is creative but that doesn't mean that you have to create everything from scratch! Find inspiration from as many sources as you can. Whether it comes from books, education, Pinterest, YouTube, Facebook, blogs, TpT or what have you, keep finding it!

10. Embraces Change

In life, things don't always go according to plan. This is particularly true when it comes to teaching. Be flexible and go with the flow when change occurs. An effective teacher does not complain about changes when a new principal arrives. They do not feel the need to mention how good they had it at their last school or with their last group of students compared to their current circumstances. Instead of stressing about change, embrace it with both hands and show that you are capable of hitting every curve ball that comes your way!

11. Creates Reflection

An effective teacher reflects on their teaching to evolve as a teacher. Think about what went well and what you would do differently next time. You need to remember that we all have failed" lessons from time to time. Instead of looking at it as a failure, think about it as a lesson and learn from it. As teachers, your education and learning is ongoing. There is always more to learn and know about in order to strengthen your teaching skills. Keep reflecting on your work and educating yourself on what you find are your "weaknesses" as we all have them! The most important part is recognizing them and being able to work on them to improve your teaching skills.

There are, indeed, several other habits that make an effective teacher but these are the ones that I find most important. Many other character traits can be tied into these ones as well.

Last word: There is always something positive to be found in every situation but it is up to you to find it. Keep your head up and teach happily for the love of education!

WhatsApp Group for English Students Teachers and Researchers

Pickwick Papers WhatsApp Group

Opportunity to Join the Best WhatsApp Community in India for English Language, Literature & Research

A Literary and Academic Group Dedicated to Arts/ Humanities in General and English Language / Literature / Research in Particular

What is Pickwick Papers?

Pickwick Papers is a platform for those from a Language & Literature background, to stay in the loop, updated & correctly informed about the literary scene & the academia. The idea behind the group is to provide our members with authentic and trustworthy information on matters connected with courses, events, vacancies, research opportunities, publishing, journals, and all such issues that concern writers, students, teachers or researchers from an Arts or Humanities background. Everyone can make posts in the group, but the admins make sure that the information provided is accurate and updated.

Now there are 8 WhatsApp groups under the Pickwick Umbrella. They host a number of activities like charity funds for the financially needy among members (Fund for Friends), lectures on literature and poetry (Pickwick Lectures), research assistance for MA/MPhil/PhD students (Pickwick Mentors), Scholarships for deserving students/ scholars, free NTA NET English coaching, and publishing assistance for aspiring authors (Pickwick Publishing), with recommendations and feedback from poets, editors and writers who are part of Pickwick Papers.

Pickwick Papers as a WhatsApp group was born in 2019, founded by a coterie of literature enthusiasts and now they are around 4500 members strong. In the group there are students, youngsters, literature enthusiasts and budding writers, rubbing shoulders with seasoned and renowned artists, teachers, writers, editors, poets, critics, research guides and publishing experts.

Who can be members?

Usually, anyone interested in literature, Arts, poetry, authors, readers, students (usually from a literary or humanities background), editors, translators – basically anyone who has an artistic or literary bend of mind. (The eligibility criteria says anyone who is pursuing or has completed an MA in Language/ Literature is eligible. Exemptions are given in special circumstances). They don't want people who live to advertise, or who look for cheap popularity; they don't tolerate spammers. They don't entertain promotions, paid or otherwise. They clearly  don't want narrow minded people who will try to use this group to promote political, religious, regional, gender-biased or any such parochial views.

To join, fill and submit the Google form: https://forms.gle/Y1Zrv2NG85cayKW17

Those who click to join from here must mention "Aifest Portal" as reference. Once the details are received, the request will be scrutinized and if you are found eligible, you will be added to the group. Pickwick Papers is a big literary family. Feel at home, keep this home tidy and sweet. Those who already members must not apply again.

Group Ethics

  1. We don't wish to have rules imposed on anyone, because all of us are mature individuals who know how to behave in a group.
  2. The language of the group is English, not because English is greater or better, but simply and only because it is the language that everyone in the group understands.
  3. There is no compulsion to post anything ever. It is perfectly fine to be a silent participant. Silence is beautiful; spamming and unnecessary forwards can spoil the ambience and waste everyone's time.
  4. When we make a post, we all make sure it contributes in some ways to the group, and also that it is in keeping with the purpose of the group.
  5. We agree that it’s difficult to join the group, because we are selective, not based on any narrow considerations, but taking into account (and scrutinizing) the interests and intentions of the aspirants.
  6. Quality matters more than quantity at Pickwick Papers. We don't share the joining link publicly or add everyone to this group because of this reason.
  7. Anyone can leave the group anytime, but once you leave, you won’t be added back (unless you leave the group accidentally. We understand such problems).
  8. Academic events, career opportunities, notifications, anecdotes, updates, news etc related to Arts and Humanities are welcome.
  9. Literary discussions are always encouraged. Ads, promotions, greetings etc are not allowed.
  10. Personal discussions should be taken to the personal window rather than continuing with it in the group.
  11. Anything that violates the common rules of propriety, or posts that are repeatedly promotional or advertising in nature, can lead to expulsion from the group.
  12. We don't live for rules, and we don't want to worry much about rules, as long as everyone respects each other's privacy, time and situation.
